What is Spyware?
Spyware is a type of malicious software (malware) used to secretly record, collect and store data from another person’s computer. The attacker that is using spyware will be looking for any information of value that they can send over to their device.
The malware will secretly record your browsing habits, websites visited, online purchases, some types will also record passwords, login credentials and credit card details. This information is then sent to the attacker to use or sell to third party.
How does spyware get on my device?
The malware is installed without your consent, it usually ends up bundled with legitimate software you intentionally download. It can also be downloaded through malicious websites or clicking links and attachments in infected emails. As soon as installed it will attach itself to the operating system and run in the background without your knowledge.
Data that is potentially stolen
- Bank account information
- online passwords
- passport numbers
- drivers licence numbers
- medical records
- online subscriptions
- names
- email addresses
- physical addresses
- software codes
What happens when your data is stolen and what do they use it for?
The attacker will use it to either sell it on the dark web or use it for attempted fraud such as identify theft. If the attacker steals enough data they will be able to gain access to secure accounts, set up credit cards using the victim’s name, or use the identity in any other way to benefit themselves.
