CYBER SECURITY TERMINOLOGY EXPLAINED

What is Spam?

Spam refers to undesired, unsolicited junk communications. While the word is commonly connected with email, it can also refer to spam comments on social media, phone calls, and text messages. Hackers often utilise spamming techniques to spread phishing emails and install malware.

Why is spam called spam?

Monty Python’s Flying Circus popularised the use of the term ‘spam’. A skit in which a group of Vikings sing loudly and continuously about Spam (the canned meat), drowning out other conversation. This skit eventually came to be associated with annoying communications, giving rise to the term “spam mail”.

Why is spam a concern?

  • Malware. Without proper cyber training, users may find it hard to differentiate between legitimate emails and malicious spam. Interacting with a malicious spam message can cause significant harm, such as downloading harmful software.
  • Inefficiency. If spam finds its way into a user’s inbox, the recipient will have to manually filter out any unsolicited messages and remove those that made it through.
  • Missed Communication. Important emails may be lost in spam filters or unintentionally destroyed with other spam.

How do I fight spam?

Here are some tips you can use to reduce spam:

  • Remove and block any spam messages that you receive. To make this process easier, you can add anti-spam filters that identify and bypass any unwanted messages before they hit your inbox.
  • Limit where you post and share your email address.
  • Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments in emails from unknown senders.
  • Familiarise yourself with typical indicators of spam, like hasty communication, grammatical errors, and unrealistic offers.
