Here are five ways you can make your passwords better. It is good practice to change your passwords regularly – either when prompted by the system, or if you’re even a slightly unsure if the account has been compromised.
If you can’t remember when you last changed your password, it’s probably time for a new one – why not change a couple of them now while you’re thinking about it?
- The longer and complex the better – make it’s at least 8 characters, contains a mix of capital and lowercase letters, symbols and numbers.
- Don’t use information or names that may be readily known to others – or easily “guessed” by programmes set up by criminals.
- Use a unique password for every account – if you can’t remember them, use a password manager to store them all securely.
- User a passphrase: a string of unconnected words, or short sentence that only you would know. Be spontaneous and replace some letters with special characters.
- Or, use the auto-generated random mix of characters and letters that your password manager suggests.
